Western
Addition Foundation for Girls
Founded
in 1985 by Ruth Garland-Dewson, the Western Addition Foundation
for Girls is a nonprofit entity dedicated to helping young
girls achieve, regardless of ethnic background. The Foundation
was founded out of concern for students at Saint Dominics
School and the children of San Franciscos Western Addition.
Mrs. Dewson says, I am honored and gratified that the
board of directors and my supporters entrust me with the
privilege of meeting kids of all nationalities and ethnic
origins. After evaluating their needs and qualifications,
I can write them a check on the spot. We offer scholarships
to elementary, high school, and college prep students. Unlike
other community-based organizations, the Foundation does
not have a staff. This ensures that over 90 percent of the
contributions received go directly to the girls. Donations
to the Foundation help pay for programs, equipment, and other
needs that cannot be met by the school, church, and educational
programs of the Western Addition. The Foundation has directly
contributed to an increase in student scholarships, new internships,
and uniforms and equipment for girls sports teams.
